Luc Van Tien: Tuyet Dinh Kungfu

If You are missing fight scenes like the movies from the late 90s then look this movie. Like iron monkey like once upon a time in China like drunken masters. This is a masterpiece from the stunt member of Jackie Chan's stunt team mate.

There was definitely a cultural gap between me (American) and this movie being from Thailand but I still enjoyed it. The martial arts choreography was fantastic! The guys from Martial Club were excellent in their roles. As well as the two martial artists that fought in the final battle.

Needless to say that I had never actually heard about this 2017 Vietnamese action comedy titled "Luc Van Tien: Tuyet Dinh Kungfu" prior to stumbling upon it in 2023. And with it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to sit down and watch it, giving it a fair chance. Director Hoang Phuc Nguyen didn't exactly deliver much of anything grand or overly thrilling here with this movie. Sure, "Luc Van Tien: Tuyet Dinh Kungfu" was watchable, but it was a rather generic and mundane movie actually. I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but the actors and actresses put on fair enough performances, given the limitations imposed upon them by a generic script and storyline. The fight scenes in the movie were adequate. It looks okay and feels natural, but it just lacks that wow effect to make it interesting and memorable fight sequences. "Luc Van Tien: Tuyet Dinh Kungfu" is suitable for a single viewing, and doesn't have the contents in the script to support a second viewing. Thus, the movie came and went without leaving a lasting impression on me, and it fade into oblivion just as quietly as it snuck in under the radar. My rating of "Luc Van Tien: Tuyet Dinh Kungfu" lands on a four out of ten stars.

A mix of comedy and really good Kung-Fu. I was very much reminded of Jackie Chan's best moves, in fact, both my wife and I suspected that the comedic sequences were inspired by Jackie's films. The basic premise of the plot, that is, the time travelling out-of-period warrior, yes, it's been done before, but that doesn't matter. There really isn't a lot to the plot, I'd describe it as a romantic comedy. Andy Long is as fit as a butcher's dog; the acrobatics in the fight sequences made me wonder if he had experience as a circus performer. Judging by his name and physical experience, I guess he has some Western ancestry. And that's it... if you like chop socky movies you will like this one, if not, well don't bother with it then, because you'd be disappointed.
