No pun intended - there are obviously a lot of scenes and a lot of music in this. Long scenes - and pacing that some will have issues with. But the central performance? Amazing to say the least. The movie is not for everyones taste - but if you delve into it ... well the movie has a few surprises along the way ... one of them being the way it ends. You are probably not prepared for that ... on the other hand, you know horror movies do tick a bit different. If you do not know what you are (shape and otherwise), what can you do, to find yourself? Well do not turn to this movie to find an answer ... feel free to enjoy the mayhem though ... also do not take tips on how to be succesful ... or how/what to eat ... it is only a movie after all.

While trying to keep her life in check, a young woman on the verge of breaking out with her singing career finds herself subject to a debilitating mental disease that threatens to consume everything she's worked for turning her into an unrecognizable monster on the way to battling the condition. This was a generally disappointing if still watchable genre effort. What works best with this one is the artistic side on display, with the film seemingly more concerned with artistic camera angles and metaphorical imagery than anything else. Telling the story about her frazzled mental state through inventive camera tricks and editing effects while highlighting the type of behavioral ticks indicative of someone looking for more out of their current state of life but never for sure what, the main focus here on her own life escapes descending into a downward spiral as the disorder rears it's ugly head continuously in her presence makes for a fine time here. This work, combining the wholly effective artistry on display with the enjoyable character work, creates a wholly intriguing psychological character study enjoyable character work, creates a wholly intriguing psychological character study in this regard. As well, once this goes for the full-on body-horror imagery present, there's a lot to like with this one as her discomfort and general disfigurement at the hands of the condition is handled with unnerving effectiveness as to whether it's all real or imagined. That said, there are still some big issues featured here. The major detrimental factor is the generally unappealing and overall bland tempo that makes this feel far longer than necessary by running everything into the ground over and over again. The idea for her mental instability and generally expected psychotic breakdown at the hands of the eating disorder becomes clear quite early on so the repetition of it all, combined with the utterly useless repetition of similar scenes featuring her at work, at the bar, or out with her friends just feels bland and boring with it all being done so many times without getting anything new going which highlights the fact that there's not enough of a story here to support this one being stretched out for as long as it is. This easily could've been trimmed down to a short or a segment in an anthology and been a much more intriguing tale since this undoes the film quite a bit making it difficult to stay with this one if you're not impressed by the visual touches on display. A body horror wrapped around an eating disorder. Shapeless has beautiful cinematography, the jazz music through the film was mesmerising as was the imagery. If it leaned more on the "horror" side I would have enjoyed it much more, but still a solid movie. Over all all a very haunting look into the heartache and pain of life with an eating disorder. You can avoid if you do not like vomiting being featured or do not like incoherent movies. It probably is aimed at American females who think they have "disordered eating" despite not having a diagnosis. Notable line: "Do you suffer from acid reflux?" Self-inflicted acid reflux could be one way of looking at it.

I had no idea what this movie was about but I gave it a try. It was more of a musical montage than a narrative film so if you are into avant-garde and experimental films, you may like this. It was likely a very personal film to someone with an eating disorder. In the end, it seems to focus more on style over substance. Lots of "artistic camera angles and claustrophobic close-ups. On one hand, it felt like the director didn't want the camera to play an intrusive part in the film by keeping it far away, but on the other hand, by doing that, the camera became intrusive as we are constantly reminded there is a camera by all the weird "artistic" shots. If you wanna watch someone eat for 90 minutes this is your film. For me, it was really hard to watch and continue my interest. It reminded me of "A Ghost Story" another dreadful film that went nowhere. It may have worked as a short film, but not as a feature as it grew tired very quickly. It was unbearable to watch.

The film moves along at a glacial speed. Because of this, I think this film could have used a good editor. It's not a bad film. It has something to say. I prefer horror films that have a point them. In this film its addictions and disorders, and how they can distort our view of the world and ourselves. But they could have drastically cut down the runtime. I really didn't like the prism effect nor the repetitive jazz/blue scenes. You could really cut this film to less than half its size. The special effects with the fingers on her back were genuinely creepy and disturbing. But the film in general isn't scary at all. Having said that, I really feel Kelly Murtagh (Ivy) is a very good actress. But not so much a singer. Lol. (Sorry Kelly) She did provide a solid performance and that's what counts. So did Jamie Neumann. I am being generous here and will give it a 7/10 because I don't think its trash.
