If they played this film at normal speed, it would be approx 30 mins. Need more action, less artsy bs.

....and people are still out there making tone-deaf bullshit?? As a Malay-speaking Australian who's had the joy of visiting Sarawak several times, I feel like contacting my friends there to commiserate, but on the off-chance they haven't been subjected to this cluster-wank colonialist bollocks I just can't do it. The locations come up a treat, the rest is just cringe-worthy. Racial and gender stereotypes are rank and the politics of colonialism are gaggingly bad. I created an account (and invented at least one word) to leave this review.

Seems like whoever directed this movie had somewhere else to be with its fast pacing and discombobulated scene to scene organization...even at just a few minutes shy of 2 hours, it is still felt so rushed and inadequately put together.

So as you have probably noticed, I gave this movie a 10/10 rating and here's why. The movie itself has a great cast with all the main actors and actresses doing a great job with what they were given. The storyline itself is not the strongest though and deviates a lot from the actual story of the White Rajahs of Sarawak. However it does it's job at getting the watched interested at the very least in the Brooke Dynasty and the White Rajahs. The movie suffered from a not full realized storyline with the director leaving a few good plot points unrealized and sub plots that were started but never finished. He also focuses a bit to much I feel on Brooke's state of mind as references to it are made throughout the film until it culminates in the death of his cousin. The romantic relationship between James and Fatima is perfect however and I'm glad it was included in the movie since it's hard to find any information on it even on Wikipedia or the internet in general. All in all though I would say the movie is definitely worth watching whether due to an interest in Sarawak or the White Rajah Dynasty or simply because you are looking for a movie to watch this evening. The reason I have rated the movie a 10 despite it's few shortcomings here and there is because it was interesting enough to get me invested enough into the story itself of the place and it's people to warrant 2 and a half hours of research after the conclusion of the movie. From James Brooke 1st White Rajah of Sarawak, Charley Brook his nephew and 2nd White Rajah of Sarawak, Fatima and the daughter James and her had(Fatima Brooke). As well as Charles Vyner Brooke who was the 3rd and last White Rajah of Sarawak after signing over the sovereignty of the nation to British rule in 1946 in return for a pension fund. It was especially interesting reading up on the differences from the movie story to real life events. A lot of parallels are also drawn in the fact that there is speculation but no firm evidence of the type of relationship James Brooke and Pengiran Badruddin had, whether it was one of just close friendship or romantic interest. You will also learn that James Brooke did acknowledge his illegitimate son George Brooke eventually. James Brooke died having never officially married... however many accounts do say that James Brooke and Pengiran Anak Fatima (Princess Fatima) married according to Muslim marriage rites and therefore James could have been married but still not recognized by governments as being officially married. James Brooke is succeeded by illegitimate son George Brooke and Daughter Fatima Brooke. It is also noted that James Brooke took a paternalistic ruling approach and was much loved by most of his people as in general he ensured the sovereignty of Sarawak and ensured that they would not be exploited by Europeans or the west. It is also noted that he spent most of his reign fighting piracy, stopping head hunting and abolishing slavery. His reign is looked down upon favorably in history as mostly positive for Sarawak and its people! The Brooke trust nowadays has close bonds with Sarawak and its people. Therefore this movie gets a 10/10 from me due to the successful piquing of my interest in Sarawak and hours of research into the White Rajahs and their kingdom, while still being a pretty great movie overall!

Rather than telling more of the history, it keeps flashing those negativity which less acquired. The movie flow also some kind of slow and there're too many uncomplete plot before another. I give a credit to some of the actors that really take it seriously. Using local actors is one of the right way to do it but, need to give them proper and crystal clear direction on what and how the scenery took place. I believe a proper direct could give these actors a filling.

Sir James Brooke was a tyrannical rich boy that sailed his ships in search of glory, which pretty much meant colonizing people of color. Honestly this mans story has more the makings of satire--a Monty Python sketch or something. He held town hostage and insisted they make him a Raj like the pouty rich boy he was. He was drunk off of other men's stories and followed in their footsteps more than he knew. Just another case of the film industry making heroes out of real life villain's. Luckily, being that the movie has 1k review it doesn't seem like anyone is seeing it.

Christ! 3 days after I watched this..."movie" I'm still thinking that this is a waiste of time! Slow, too much mysticism, too much romantic. Nothing was real! Brooke was a kind of Human rights member, against violence and killing, and slavery in...19th century. C'mon this is BS! In real he was greedy b*stard, wanting to gain power and money. And the "pirates"- yes, they were real but nothing like in the movie. They had ships, they attacked every ship, the piracy flourish in these waters at this time. Rate:1.
