One of the funniest and joyful films I've seen in my long life. The banter between the star and his daughter gave me great memories of my own daughter. Even though in French and some Japanese the English subtitles were very easy to read even though my French is very basic. Having watched a number of Jean Reno films his underlying wit and humour shone through in Wasabi and I'm only sorry I missed the opportunity to tape it. If anyone knows if there is a DVD copy around I'd be grateful if someone would send me details. A shame more people were not as complimentary but if everyone agreed with each other life would be very dull.

Where is the sequel to this great movie. One of the best for this actor, a sequel would do all of them justice. (recommend "MUMU's return to France") (Wasabi II)..This movie was every bit entertaining as any previous movie I have watched. I bought the movie after the first time I saw it on the movie channel. I have watched it in all the languages and with the subtitles on to see what the difference was between what they said and what was translated and found the the translation only enhances the dialog. The plot was different than anything I have seen lately and was brought off very smoothly. The characters were well defined and the humor, though dry, was exact and to the point.

Take away the always interesting granite charm of Jean Reno and there is nothing left. The plot has enough holes to fill The Albert Hall. The Yumi character is hyper active and actively irritating. It's another Luc Besson character like Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element, and nobody needs another of those. Too much violence for a comedy ,and too much alleged 'comedy' for a thriller. Meanwhile the Momo character is in an entirely separate comedy only film....ugh. (Did Tarantino get the idea for a large number of smartly dressed Yakusa for the hero to dispose of from this film? Probably, though Black Rain is in the mix there somewhere, as well.)

With this film French civilization reaches a new low. A stupid, implausible-yet-predictable story is combined with second-rate acting and made-for-TV production values to produce a film which is an insult to the intelligence of the audience. This film makes the typical Hollywood blockbuster seem like a masterpiece by Robert Bresson or Fellini. At least when Hollywood makes garbage it upholds minimum standards of watchability, technical proficiency, and human interest. This film does none of the above, and seems to indicate that the French don't want to be second to Americans in anything, not even in making terrible films. Fortunately I watched this film on a mini-screen on the airplane, so I didn't have to pay for it and was able to change the channel whenever it became too excruciating to watch. Recommended only to those who are blithering idiots or who have a morbid curiosity about the deplorable state of popular French cinema.

Violent, dramatic or romantic... in all situations Jean Reno is a pleasure to watch. This *Besson* movie is about an French ex-commando employed as chief in the French police, who receives information about the existence of a daughter he's never seen before. Its a legacy of his formal and only true love, who died in a mysterious way. The story unfolds in Japan. It's funny and never boring.

Nice sound-track, ridiculous storyline. Maybe it's a little superficial about the Japanese pop sub-culture, but that's why i watched it (because of the pop sub-culture, not for it being superficial :). After Taxi _1_ Luc Besson is so naive in storylines it almost makes me disappointed for the money i spend on his movies.
