Director Simon Fink relates the grimly gripping story at a constant pace, maintains a harsh gritty tone throughout, and astutely captures the bleak and oppressive world of the gulag. Arthur M. Jolly's hard-hitting script spells out in no uncertain terms the savage extreme lengths people will resort to in the name of survival. The strong cast definitely rise to the challenge of the sinewy material, with especially stand-out work from Jolene Anderson as ruthless top con Masha, Katharine Isabelle as the sickly, but angry Lubov, Vera Cherny as the mousy Prushka, and Asa Wallander as the kindly Svetlana. A potent and impressive little film.

I found this film as a fan of Katharine Isabelle's. Katharine plays a prisoner in this bunkhouse with several other women who all seem to be tied to one another in a way the film slowly unravels. It's the kind of film that you want to rewatch and talk with someone about because of the psychological parts to it. Know what you're getting into and you'll be intrigued by the characters and their struggle. It's an art film, not an action. It's contained, got moments of excellent tension, touching music, etc but it's not your classic Hollywood thriller. If you like movies like The LIghthouse, I'd say check it out.

Well worth watching, yet the American accents and twisted ending let it drop from a 9 to a 6 for me.

I'd read and discussed quite a bit about the Gulag in college history classes, but this movie made those experiences come alive in a way that reading about couldn't. A tough movie to watch, but one I thought about for a long time afterward.

I stumbled across this film while searching for something short to watch - 1 hour 13 mins is just right for my bath & iPad session! I've never done a review - had to reset my password a few times to get back into IMDB & I'm not a crazy film buff so beware this is basic. The graphics at the beginning were absolutely mesmerising, they told a story before it began. And it had me gripped all the way through - it's a bit of a burner and made my head swim a few times with questions, personally I like that in a film. Very few actors, but a lot going on, and in the whole the characters were believable. Sad story, this film won't make you smile but it will make you think, there are layers if you want to see them. Have to say the ending did twist my melon a bit, I guess it's interpretation. Totally recommend, just watch it.

I haven't watched the entire film yet. Just starting to watch. I started watching the beginning of the movie with the mindset of watching an evil women get her just deserts due to the review of In-IMDb-1 stating that this woman (leading character) committed cold blooded premeditated murder. That she brought the knife to intentionally kill this dude when in fact it was not. She didn't know her estranged husband would be at the train station. She was trying to free herself and make a clean getaway from her husband before he returned from the war. He gets violent with her on the train platform pulling her head back by grabbing a fistful of her hair. The killing of her husband was in self defense not cold blooded murder. Therefore it was not Karma this woman received by being sent to a camp but more bad luck. It's sad and also that you have people like this reviewer that appears to not see other human beings as their equal. He gave me a false impression of what the Foundation of the movie would Be. Or maybe he/she was just trolling on the review. Who knows.
