Hoping to find a cure to the disease that is destroying him from within, The Professor follows Agatha on a strange and risky journey into a forgotten but not entirely deserted urban wasteland. Sure, that's the logline, but this film makes getting there so different, so trippy and so intense. Kelly Bigelow and Roland Becera did just about everything in this movie from directing, writing, editing, costumes, casting, effects and animation. It's a truly singular work that presents an ever-evolving series of images that creates a dark mood while presenting what it calls "the disintegration of nature, institutions and people." It's more a series of imagery and tone than an actual narrative film, so if that's what you're expecting, well...then this just isn't going to work for you. If you're feeling adventurous, however, this movie has a rewarding look and feel. It's like exploring a series of dark paintings and nearly falling through them, unsure if what you're seeing is either live action or animation or something in the middle.

OMG. Hands down this is the very WORST movie I have seen all year. In fact, it's the worst movie 've seen in a couple decades. I hostly don't even know what I just watched. It's a strange excuse for filmmaking. I'm not sure if there are any real actors or if the characters are comuter generated. And that's not a good thing. It's a mishmosh of nothing that leads nowhere. I gave up hoping it would get better early one because it was clear the entire ovie was going to be like this. I've never been at such a loss to explain what was put on my TV screen. There is no acting to speak of. The characters are jumpy on the screen. The color is very weird like someone put overlay over overlay of colors that blended to oe puke color. And the music sound like it was pulled from some stock catalog from the 50's. Please don't let this review pique your interest in seeing the film. We need to NOT support abject garbage like this.

Agatha resides at the intersection of an experimental art piece and a horror movie. Knowing that, you know how to proceed with this film. Agatha is visually stunning but ultimately difficult to process at times. It is mesmerizing and dreamy and entirely devoid of dialogue. There are maybe ten spoken lines in the entire film, and all the exposition in the story is delivered visually with layers of allegory painted on. The movie appears to have been run through a digital Rotoscope effect. A live-action film that has been run through a heavy digital filter to deliver a gauzy oil painting comes-to-life atmosphere. The film is loaded with visual detailing, alternating between a Victorian curio of collected history and a completely blighted urban apocalypse as the primary settings for the film. Agatha asks a lot of the audience. Themes of sickness, grief, revenge, forgiveness, shame, decay, and ritual all are on display here. The storyline is not linear either, with looping scenes and flashbacks that will test your attention. I would get lost from time to time, and if you happen to watch this with someone who will ask questions during a movie, you should probably consider watching this alone, because you will be having to describe a dream in midstream, and it will be difficult to explain. Is it fun? No, not really. It is definitely an intellectual piece, and certainly not for everyone. (See some of the other reviews here.) But, if you are the type of person who can sit in front of a Hieronymus Bosch and find dark meanings, this movie will be your bag.
