I was interested enough to watch this movie for several factors, like the cast (Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker), the South African setting, and the fact that the filmmakers were not American - the last two factors promising that the film would feel a lot different than Hollywood product. But to be honest, I kind of felt let down by what I saw. The main problem with the movie is that there is a distinct lack of tension and urgency for the most part. Yes, there is some brutal violence here and there, but otherwise the movie felt kind of soft and slow, and I found it hard to get involved with the story. Also, while the South African backdrop does definitely provide some color and originality, at the same time the movie more often than not feels and looks like a television show. A respectfully budgeted TV show, but a TV show all the same. While I wouldn't immediately say no to watching something else by these same filmmakers, I would hope that they would have learned from their mistakes here.

The pace of the movie makes it a thrilling experience from start to finish. The film was very good from the start and continued all the way through at a good pace. Zulu was very well directed somehow the director Jérôme Salle kept the story full of action yet dramatic in a real down to earth way. Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom made quite an impression on me. A movie with well developed characters, telling a gripping story, that leads to a meaningful ending. The movie displays some signs of a low budget but good acting, skillful direction n solid plot covers up the weaknesses. Beautiful images of the coast and the wealthier neighborhoods on one side n poor slums on the opp side r the harsh realities shown here. The characters r very well developed. Whittakers character suffering from psychological problems, including memories from his childhood, (sees his father being tortured n set on fire). I was wondering why Whittakers character touches one naked lady n never indulges in sex. There's a very shocking suspense to it. Sad n depressing at times but good action/drama. The movie was not promoted well. Jus saw recently on a DVD without having any idea bout it. The posters of Whittaker n Orlando gav me hope to pick the DVD.

ZULU is a the kind of European thriller that will stay in your mind for long. It is not an easy thing to digest. There are many violent scenes and it pretty much states that in South Africa; human lives do not have any real value. A young girl is find dead in a beach; a ZULU police captain (Forest Whitaker captivating) and two other cops; a very good Conrad Kemp (doing his best with an underdeveloped character) and an outstanding Orlando Bloom; get to investigate. Things become more and more complex when synthetic drugs are discovered and old apartheid functionaries involved. To make matters worse; every character have its own inferno. A strong movie like this; suffers when some situations are too easily resolved; but even with minor errors the movie is capable of holding interest until very end. In brief; it is not a movie for kids but young adults should see it as well as adults.

I wasn't expecting that much from this movie when I first clicked it, but the black guy I love his acting he's got that lazy eye lulz. Any way, the movie starts off innocuously but then all of a sudden one of the cops gets his arm chopped off with a machete. Then he gets hacked in the throat to top it off and dies. Once this took place I was shocked and basically continued in a state of shock and awe until the end of the movie. The ending scenes are awesome, with his walking in the desert and chasing the guy, epically shot and really good ending music. Even though the unraveling plot line ends up being kind of ho-hum, the movie overall is a solid action thriller. It's totally about South Africa and the tension that is always present between black and white. Oh yeah, hell of a movie.

Wouldn't have watched it if not recommended, I wish I had seen this in the cinemas. Just stumbled upon it and the movie sets a notion to prepare it's audience to slowly, gradually and surely lead them into a realist, heart wrenching tale of present day reality in South Africa with such defined details on delivering the story, the character's are more than convincing. The acting and environment just makes me want more of this tale telling... Entertaining, capturing, dragging the viewer into a world so real. Film making at its best glad I watched it as the title, cover and overall rating doesn't come close to doing justice!

Officers Ali Sokhela (Forest Whitaker) and Brian Epkeen (Orlando Bloom) begin investigating the death of a young woman who has been killed by an illegal drug that has recently been supplied to her. In addition to investigating her death, Sokhela and Epkeen also discover that several black people within the area are also either dying or disappearing in mysterious circumstances. Both officers believe that there is a link between the woman's death and the deaths involving black people and set about trying to establish how all the deaths are connected.... Given South Africa's rather turbulent and fraught history regarding its 'race-relations' policy a film like Zulu can either be seen as brave or misguided. As an open-minded person myself I tried to view this film objectively and basically take it for what it is and sadly even going in with this forgiving mind-set I still left feeling rather disappointed.... For a start the story is unbearably slow and just isn't that compelling (all this despite the fact that it is possibly interesting when looked upon from a recent historical perspective). I haven't read the book and therefore I can't comment on how the characters are perceived in the original source material, but in this film with Whitaker and Bloom I felt like the screenwriters were attempting to portray their characters similar to Murtagh and Riggs from Lethal Weapon - this is more noticeable with Bloom who is the unhinged, gung-ho police officer with a drink problem. The difference between these two films is that Riggs was better developed in Lethal Weapon in that we at least understand why he behaved the way that he did? Bloom's character shares similar traits, but we're never really given any explanation as to why he is the way that he is? Is it because his marriage broke down? The problematic relationship with his child was badly handled and his constant visits to his ex-wife were distracting and often dragged the story in a direction that it didn't need to go in. All this makes him hard to take to as a character and even harder to like or care about. Forest Whitaker gives another good performance and his character is slightly better developed, but again he isn't a particularly interesting character (the most interesting thing about watching his performance was seeing his Idi Amin accent come out of retirement once more). Once I'd made the analogy between the two cops here and the two cops in Lethal Weapon it only reminded me of how dull this film is in comparison. Whilst it may be set during a rather important period in South Africa's history the film sadly is held back by dull and uninteresting characters, and a story that isn't as compelling as it may seem due to its rather plodding nature.

A well crafted and powerful drama that never compromises. There really isn't much more that needs to be said. This is the type of movie Hollywood rarely makes. A movie with well developed characters, telling a gripping story, that leads to a meaningful ending. This is the type of product that comes from integrity, professionalism, and hard work. There's nothing particularly flashy or preachy. A strong compelling story that moves well and is believable. One that has characters you are invested in. Three homicide officers are tasked with investigating a drug murder. The officers are shown in detail as the investigation quickly evolves and then consumes them. At it's strongest the movie does an amazing job of presenting a believable South Africa. One that is moral, realistic, and hopeful.

Open your mind to a whole mindset apart from the US and find a dark movie with lost souls trying to find some redemption. Orlando Bloom is quite exceptional playing a lost cop with his captain Forrest Whitaker, another lost soul trying to find his forgiveness for crimes against South African blacks. There is a lose tie in regarding an apartheid program to eliminate or sterilize blacks, a true story if you research it. In the end Orlando Bloom's character finds trying to not use violence is his redemption but is forced into it. While Forrest Whitaker's character finds his redemption is to use violence to stop a horrendous plot. Frankly Bloom was terrific and as usual Whitaker blew me away as a wonderful actor totally underrated. His acting as a seasoned cop at the end really came through thou who could see Whitaker as a bit of an action guy !!!! I give it nine out of ten as it is hard to watch but you just can't stop. Seymour Phillip Hoffman and Forrest Whitaker, two way underrated actors who deserve more than they have.
