the movie was a hit back in the 90's but this copy isn't good as their are important scenes that are cut from the original movie

Renaissance Man

'Renaissance Man' is a film about a teacher who is hired to teach literature to a group of rebellious army recruits. It is a film about the relationship that this teacher has with the students and the changes that all of them make. The teacher learns how to appreciate the army recruits and gets a sense of understanding from them; at the same time, they learn how to buckle down and actually enjoy reading and learning about Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. This is one of those feel-good films. I got really sick of watching this film as it was always on television and one of those films that my family tended to watch and rewatch at least a dozen times. This film has its share of laughter and succeeds in providing a feel-good story and a happy ending.

The central premise of the film, that DeVito's character is trying to teach a bunch of unteachable recruits, is ridiculous once you listen to the characters for a few minutes. They are, at worst, typical recruits, and often well beyond that. Stacey Dash is incapable of playing an idiot. I kept waiting for these awful people and they never showed up. Anyone who's been in the service has met far worse people, and probably had to take orders from some of them. Take that how you will; I'm the guy that complains about revolvers firing 9 shots between reloads. Aside from that, it's a cute movie, and I do like it. I liked it as a kid and it was nice to see it again.

I love this movie. I can relate to Danny DeVito's character on many levels. I can relate being someone that's had to be out of his element, but learn to thrive and ultimately become a better person because of it. You could see that through DeVito's character throughout the movie. He starts as a guy, down on his luck, reluctantly taking this job in the Army, is so far out of his element but by the end of the movie he's a better person. You see him become a better father, a better teacher, and just a better person over all. You can also see a transformation by the soldiers in his class. They start out a group of misfits, and it culminates with them being a unified team. This movie is underrated, and I wish got some more attention.

Renaissance Man is a must see for any person who has any emotions at all. DeVito hands in one of his most believable and moving performances as an actor. The cast around him just dazzles and the chemistry between the characters makes this one of the best films ever!

I think Renaissance Man is a great movie.With Mark Wahlberg in it the movie is even more fun(He is so hot)!! The music is an automatic A+ and if I were to rate this movie from a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it an absolute 10!I would recommend this movie to anyone that likes to laugh and that loves Mark with all their heart (Like me).

This is one of those movies that, while not a blockbuster, is well-written and executed adequately. The story is a fine example of instilling a sense of self-confidence in a group of people that have grown up thinking they were deficient in some way, only to discover that they have the same abilities as everyone else. It's not the sort of movie I'd go see in a theater, but is one that I like to watch from time to time. The 8 ranking is exclusively for the concept, and surely not for the acting. Danny DeVito is clearly the best portrayed character in that regard, however. Gregory Hines gives his character an extreme over-the-top feel that is more accurately associated with Marine Corps Drill Instructors than Army Drill Sergeants. It doesn't work very well with the more laid-back atmosphere of Army training.

I have a lot of respect for Penny Marshall as a director. I would like to see more movies like this. Danny D.and Gregory H. are a good team. Good casting, I liked the entire cast. That is a hard thing to accomplish.
