The criminal justice system disproportionately impacted communities of color and the chains of slavery are clearly seen when examining mass incarceration. Because of mandatory sentencing and three strikes laws, folks of color are subjected to life sentences for minor offenses. This film allows for a deeper understanding of the practice of mass incarceration and excessive punishment. Dr. Sheppard has done a great job of exposing the harms in the U. S., Wahington State and Tacoma, WA specifically with tangible examples of criminal justice reform and restorative justice. The power, strength and resilience captured are extremely powerful and this is a must see!

My mom made me watching this movie for her birthday, and I'm so glad I did. I've long known that the US criminal justice system is unjust and cruel, but this documentary really opened my eyes. Especially regarding the prevalence of gangs in the 90s, it gave me a much better understanding of how children got caught up in that lifestyle. I really believe it should be required viewing because this system is not serving our country well. It doesn't make us safer, it increases suffering and robs young people of their future.
